This theory is one of the most famous theories that analysed the relationship between the audience and the media.  The media create an atmosphere that cause the audience to become passive and immediately take on the views of the media.

Ofcom- tries to ensure people get the best from their communications services and are protected from scams.

PPC (Press Complaints Commission) The PCC is an independent self-regulatory body which deals with complaints about
the editorial content of newspapers and magazines (and their websites).

BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) The British Board of Film Classification is an independent, non-governmental body which has classified cinema films since it was set up in 1912 and videos/ DVDs since the Video Recordings Act was passed in 1984.

News Values

All the things that make the news worthy:

  • Readers and audience can relate to it.
  • Make sure the content is relevant.
  • Clear outcome.
  • Appeal to the target audience.

Continuity

A story that is already in the news gathers a kind of inertia. This is partly because the media organizations are already in place to report the story, and partly because previous reportage may have made the story more accessible to the public (making it less ambiguous).

Inertia is the resistance of any physical object to a change in its state of motion or rest. It is represented numerically by an object’s mass.

Unexpectedness: If an event is out of the ordinary it will have a greater effect than something that is an everyday occurrence.

Negativity: Bad news is more newsworthy than good news.

Reference to elite persons: Stories concerned with the rich, powerful, famous and infamous get more coverage.

Threshold:

  • an event has to reach a certain threshold before it becomes news- a small tremor might not be news whereas a sizable earthquake reaches the threshold to be reported. A house burglary might not be crime news but a violent murder will be. The intensity of an event/issue is important, too. The more violent a demonstration or murder, the more newsworthy it becomes.

Total Pro Sports – Today officially Dwyane Wade’s divorce with his wife Siohvaughn has hit it’s boiling point.  Reports have surfaced in the legal papers published by the Miami Herald that Dwyane Wadeabandoned his children, committed adultery, and infected her with an unspecified sexually transmitted disease.  To top everything off, all his wife wants is the names of all Dwayne’s sexual partners for some odd reason. Jet (styled JET) is an American weekly marketed toward African American readers, founded in 1951 by John H. Johnson of Johnson Publishing Company in Chicago, Illinois.  Both men and women read this magazine.  Even though he is an athlete this magazine is not published just for a sports fan.  This magazine contains articles about fashion, beauty and lifestyle.  From the cover of the magazine it is clear to see that he is being portrayed as a fashionable, young sports superstar.

Sports Illustrated is an North American sports magazine owned by media conglomerate Time Warner. It has over 3.5 million subscribers and is read by 23 million adults each week, including over 18 million men. It was the first magazine with circulation over one million to win the National Magazine Award for General Excellence twice. Its swimsuit issue, which has been published since 1964, is now an annual publishing event that generates its own television shows, videos and calendars.

Evaluation for my media coursework:

 

When we were first set the coursework, I immediately researched documentaries and other footage of up and coming “rappers”.  However this was not the easiest to find.  I then decided to look at current and popular, well established “rappers”.  This is where I found the “Lil Wayne” documentary and the RnB singer Trey songz  tour footage.  This gave me numerous ideas to create something similar for my artist “Lyoungs”. 

 

I first looked at how I could fit everything thing that I found from the footage of “Lil Wayne” and “Trey Songz” footage, as I believed that I would be reaching out to a very similar audience.   The main audience I was trying to attract was the young, trendy music “lover”.  I believe that the age range that would be most suitable to watch my promotional video would be from the age of 16+.  This is quite representative through the language that the artist used, “slang” and the subjects that he touches on in his lyrics. 

 

As I worked alone with this project, I took responsibility for everything.  This was down to the research, filming, location searching and editing.

 

`My coursework would take on the genre of a documentary.  I believe that the quality of my final piece of filming could defiantly compete with the other documentaries that I had researched.  This is due to the quality of the individual clips.  The sound is clear, it has smooth transitions and an obvious “storyline” through out.  I believe that my promotional video, will give Lyoungs great leverage as an up and coming artist.

It shows his work ethic in the studio and how he interacts with his produce.  Also, it shows how he balances his friendships and music career, along side his day time job.  For his followers and future followers, this really highlights that he is like everyone else in society.  Many people can relate to the stresses or balancing different roles that people play in their day to day lives. 

 

My press release gives enough information for the media to get an understanding of how is tour and album will run.  Also it is another way of  to show people what he is about and how it is possible for many people to draw towards him. 

I kept my flyer quite plain, but I do believe it is quite affective.  This really links well with the type of person and the persona that he is trying to put across to the general public.  The fonts and language used really connects with the youth and young adults of today. 

 

The main audience that I believe will have interest in my work will be the teenager or young adult that enjoys hip hop with a hint of pop.  This can rang from black or white, no matter what race, I am sure they will enjoy it.  The audience that I have reached out to, will be able to get a greater insight of the artist “Lyoungs” which will allow them to base their own opinion on his music.  If they like him I am sure they will buy his music, visit his website or even attend his concert.

 

The use of his own music throughout the footage really draws the viewer in as forced to listen to his music.  They can either close the video or continue to listen.  Due to the fact that I chose to use his music rather than another artist, helps promote his music. 

 

Using a range of shots and angles keeps the viewer concentrated.  Also using flyers and posters keeps the urban and edgy appeal, which draws the younger trendy follower interested.  The press release is for the professional who is interested in investing or help the artist.  So there is something for everyone to get a grip with.

 

Using the information from the brief, that outlined exactly what i needed to do.  I produced the following information; a flyer, poster, press release and a promotional video.  All of which had the correct information on.  The flyer had all the tour dates and venues that his tour would be taking place at.  The posters included the dates and tracks that would be on the album.  All of this information was then put onto the press release, which also had further information about contacting the artist “Lyoungs”.

Since i used an affective schedule that allowed me to carry out my filming efficiently, this allowed me to gather the right footage for my filming to draw the viewer in even more.  The footage that i used should keep the interest of the viewer, especially as it has quick rapid and smooth pace. 

 

The artist that i decided to pick is from a good and quite privileged background. This is highlighted in the interview scene in the promotional video.  Most people believe rappers to come from the “hood” and live a life of crime.  However, “Lyoungs “can can talk about the same issues and experiences as he has grown up with people who have been in tough circumstances.  As he noted rapping was not his first choice of career.  He was into sports before he started rapping, lucky he found his talents and used them to the best of his abilities so FAR.

 

He is a young white rapper which to some people could find quite strange.  The issues that he is talking about within his lyrics are quite advanced, but in society today, many young people can relate to them.  The main message in the video is that no matter what background you come from, or what race you are, people will support your struggle.  Also the music that he produces is positive so it is quite different from most other rappers.  It may sound hard and aggressive, but the actually lyrics are not.

 

I believe that i have created a successful project.  However if we had more time and the actual footage duration was increased, i am sure that my production could be even better.  Further more, the fact that i stuck to the brief and produced all the footage and documents.  I am sure for the time given, the standard of work is extremely high.  Overall, i am very impressed with my promotional video as it maintains all the correct information and footage.  However, as i have not used photoshop before i believe that my flyer and poster could be better.  I could have spent a bit more time on those to piece to make them even better which would increase the standard of them. For future reference i will make sure i set aside enough time for them.
